Nutrition Label Lies & Loopholes - Serving Size Sleight of Hand

For years, concerned consumers and watchdog organizations have been screaming that the U.S. labeling laws are full of loopholes and in need of serious revision. After years of talk, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says they're planning to so something about it. But will it be enough?

There are many food labeling issues we could complain about, but one of the biggest problems (due to its direct relationship to the obesity crisis) is serving sizes.

I'm not just talking about supersizing. What's worse is that the actual calories are being disguised with serving size sleight of hand. Let me show you some examples:

Tostitos touch of lime. Calories per serving: 150. Not too bad for tortilla chips, eh? Not so fast. Check that serving size: 1 ounce. That's a whopping 6 chips. There are 10 servings per container. That's 1500 calories in the bag.

Most guys could knock off half that bag for a cool 750 calories. Ok, suppose you have some restraint and you only eat a third of the bag (20 chips). You still get 500 calories. But who stops at 6 chips?

Vitamin Water. While I could rant about how sugar water is being marketed as health food, I'll stick with the serving size sleight for now.

The label says there are 50 calories per serving. Wow, only 50 calories! Plus they add all those vitamins. Must be good for you and perfect for dieters, right? Think again. Look at the serving size and servings per container: 8 oz per serving and 2.5 servings per container.

Excuse me, but is there ANY reason for making it 2.5 servings other than to disguise the actual calorie content?

When you see that the entire bottle is 20 ounces, you realize that it contains 125 calories, not 50. Although 20 ounces is a large bottle, I don't know many guys who wouldn't chug that whole thing.

Sobe Lifewater? Same trick in their 20 oz bottles.

Healthy Choice soup, country vegetable. They make these in convenient little microwavable containers with a plastic lid. Just heat and eat.

It says 90 calories and 480 mg of sodium per serving. Wow, less than a hundred calories. Wait a minute though. Turn the container around and you see the serving size is 1 cup and the servings per container says "about 2."

Huh? It looks pretty obvious to me that this microwave-ready container was designed for one person to eat in one sitting, so why not just put 180 calories per container on the label (and 960 mg of sodium). I guess 90 calories and 480 mg sodium sounds... well... like a healthier choice!

Ben and Jerry's chocolate fudge brownie ice cream.

This infamously delicious ice cream with its own Facebook fan page has 270 calories per serving.

We all know ice cream is loaded with calories and should only be an occasional treat, but 270 calories per serving, that's not too terrible is it?

Look a little closer at the label. The serving size is a cup. Who eats a half a cup of ice cream? In fact, who hasn't polished off a whole pint by themselves?

According to Ben and Jerry, there are 4 servings in that one pint container. 270 calories times 4 servings = 1080 calories! That's about half a days worth of calories for an average female.

I could go on and on - crackers, chocolate chip cookies, muffins, pasta, boxed cereals (who eats ¾ cup of cereal), etc. But I think you get the point.

What's the solution to this mess? News reports in the last week say that the FDA may be cracking down. Count me among those who are pleased to hear this news. One of their ideas is to post nutritional information, including the calories, on the FRONT of the food labels.

The problem is, this move by itself could actually make matters worse. Suppose Tostitos started posting "150 calories per serving" right on the front of the bag. Most people would assume the chips were low in calories. Putting calorie info on the front of the label would help only if it clearly stated the amount of calories in the entire package or in a normal human-sized serving!

Ah, but the FDA says they're on top of that too. They also want to standardize or re-define serving sizes. Sounds great, but there are critics who say that consumers would take it as approval to eat larger servings so the strategy would backfire.

Suppose for example, the government decides that no one eats ½ a cup of Ben and Jerry's so they make the new serving size 1 cup, or half the pint-sized container. Now by law the label says 540 calories per serving instead of 270. Is that like getting official permission to eat twice as much?

I'm not against the FDA's latest initiative, but what we really need is some honesty in labeling.

Food manufacturers should not be allowed to manipulate serving sizes in a way that would trick you into thinking there are fewer calories than there really are in a quantity that you're likely to eat.

It would be nice to have calories for the entire package listed on the label at a glance. A new rating scale for caloric density would be cool too, if it could be easily interpreted. It would also be nice to have serving sizes chosen for quantities that are most likely to be commonly eaten. But standardization of serving sizes for all types of foods is difficult.

My friends from Europe tell me that food labels over there are listed in 100g portions, making comparisons easy. But when you consider how much each individual's daily calorie needs can vary (easily 3-fold or more when you run the gamut from totally sedentary to elite athlete, not to mention male and female differences), standardization that applies to everyone may not be possible.

I think the recent laws such as requiring calories on restaurant menus are a positive move that will influence some people's behavior. But no label changes by themselves will solve the obesity crisis. A real solution is going to have to include personal responsibility, nutrition education, self-discipline, hard work and lifestyle change.

Changes in the labeling laws won't influence everybody because the people most likely to care about what labels say are those who have already made a commitment to change their lifestyles (and they're least likely to eat processed and packaged foods - that have labels - in the first place). Actually, for those who care, all the info you need is already on the labels, you just have to do a little math and watch out for sneaky label tricks.

There's one true solution to this portion distortion and label lies problem: Become CALORIE AWARE. Of course that includes educated label reading, but it goes much further. Here is how I define "calorie counting:"

1. Get a good calorie counter book, chart or electronic device/software and get to know the calorie counts of all the staple foods you eat on a daily basis. Look up the calorie values for foods you eat occasionally.

2. Always have a daily meal plan - on paper - with calories printed for each food, each meal and the day. Use that menu as a daily goal and target.

3. Educate yourself about average caloric needs for men and women and learn how to estimate your own calorie needs as closely as you can based on your activity, weight, body composition, height, gender and age.

4. Get a good kitchen food scale and use it.

Keep counting calories and doing nutrition by the numbers until you are unconsciously competent and eating the right quantities to easily maintain your ideal weight becomes second nature.

Obviously, saying that calories are all there is to nutrition is like saying that putting s all there is to golf. Calorie quality and quantity are both important. However, it's a mistake to ignore the calorie quantity side of the game. Serving sizes matter and even healthy foods get stored as fat if you eat too much..

You can play "blindfolded archery" by guessing your calories and food portions if you want to. Hey, you might get lucky and guess right. Personally, I wouldn't recommend depending on luck - or the government - for something as important as your body and your health.

Haunted Myrtle's Plantation

Myrtle's Plantation was built in 1794 in St. Francisville, Lousiana by General David Bradford. At the time of it's construction, this now famous plantation was known as "Laurels Grove". Myrtle's Plantation has been the home to various families since it was built, but the most legendary would be that of the Woodruff's.

Clark Woodruff was a former law student of Bradford and eventually married Bradford's daughter, Sara. The two had three children together, named Cornelia Gale, James and Mary Octavia. Upon the death of General Bradford, The Woodruffs began to manage the plantation.

Legend of Chloe

According to legend, the Woodruff's are said to have owned a slave by the name of Chloe. Clark Woodruff is said to have kept Chloe as a mistress. Chloe was a house slave and did much of the cooking, cleaning and other various household chores. When Chloe began to suspect that Woodruff may be growing tired of her and may put her back in the fields, she began to eavesdrop on his conversations. One fateful day, Chloe was caught listening to Clark Woodruff's business dealings through a keyhole. After being caught, Woodruff had her ear cut off as punishment. Chloe is said to have worn a green turban to hide her disfigurement from that day forward.

Although Chloe remained silent, she was angry about her punishment and was now more worried than ever about being put into the fields with the other slaves. One day, Chloe baked a birthday cake for Sara and the children. This cake was her own special recipe, consisting of poisonous oleander leaves. Some say that this was done in an effort to show how useful she was to the family. The idea being that when they all became sick, she would know exactly what was wrong and nurse them to health. Others say that it was simply an act of revenge. Either way, Sara and her two daughters were killed. Chloe was hanged shortly after. But not before cursing the plantation. Many people say that Myrtle's Plantation is haunted by the ghost of a woman wearing a green turban. The figure of a black woman wearing a turban has been seen by a number of people, wandering the grounds. Most locals know exactly who this ghostly figure is. They say that it is the Ghost of Chloe.

Other Ghosts and Legends

Chloe's ghost isn't the only mysterious occurrence on the grounds of Myrtle's Plantation. Others have witnessed two little girls in old fashioned clothing playing on the grounds and peeking from windows. Could this be the Woodruff girls? The plantation is rumored to have been built on an ancient Indian burial ground, which to some, could explain the heavy concentration of strange activity. It is also said that three union soldiers were shot and killed while attempting to ransack the home during the civil war. The spot where they fell has had a stain resembling blood since that day, that cannot be removed. Some cleaners even claim that they cannot push their mops onto the ghostly stain. There is also a custom that called for all mirrors to be covered after the death of a family member during the days of the Woodruffs. Legend states that one mirror was not covered after the death of Sara and her children and that the Ghosts of Sara and her daughters are trapped within the mirror that still hangs on the wall to this day. There are other legends and tales of ghosts at Myrtle's Plantation. You can discover them yourself, if you dare. Myrtle's Plantation is now a bed and breakfast and welcomes anyone the chance to spend a night with the Ghosts of Myrtle's Plantation.

Love Test in Film - How Does a Classic 60's Love Story Spark Romance in Modern Couples?

Bob Carol Ted and Alice is a hip 1969 film that climaxed in a king size bed where two married couples played by Robert Culp, Natalie Wood, Elliot Gould and Dyan Cannon attempt to swap partners with their closest friends. Their friendly orgy fizzles as curiosity and concern for their mates visibly steals their focus away from their new romantic partner.

I often tell my online community that distracted focus is the root cause of most marital or relationship challenges. This 60's film illustrates this--not only in the aborted orgy among friends, but also in the way these couples face extramarital temptations at work and at play.

Why should modern couples watch this Turner Classic Movie revival?

You will discover timeless strategies that guide you around relationship minefields. In an early scene, Bob and Carol (Robert Culp and Natalie Wood) participate in a couples coaching weekend at The Institute, where Bob is doing research for his documentary film.

The couples Coach explains their emotional objective as he says, "We talk about love, but how often do we feel it? Maybe this work will open some doors."

The Coach says people rarely talk to each other or deal with what you really feel. He says the truth is always gorgeous. He encourages couples to dig beyond the surface to discover and express true feelings in each moment.

His coaching helps Bob realize that he's afraid to ask for help. When he admits this truth and shows his vulnerability to his wife, this emotional breakthrough helps them feel closer as a couple.

Yet the goal of being open and acting upon your feelings in each moment can come with risks to your relationship. When Bob has a one-night stand with a young woman who's working on his film, he returns home and tells his wife the truth.

Upon her questioning, he admits it was only a physical thing without love. He expects his wife to be jealous or angry. Instead, she seems turned on by the sexual competition and asks her husband to compare her kissing to that of his fling. His wife (Natalie Wood) wins that competition.

Weeks later, when Bob comes home early from a film location and finds his wife having a fling with her tennis coach, his jealousy is aroused. They deal with it by expressing their feelings and finding the emotional truth. She did not have a loveless fling to get even with her husband, but only to get the same experience.

When Bob and Carol admit their dalliances and discoveries to their close friends, Ted and Alice, it causes Alice to shut down sexually in disapproval and it frees her husband, Ted, to have an affair. Alice eventually suggests their partner-swapping party to revive her sexual desire, which ultimately reverts back to her husband without needing to have an affair that's against her moral code.

The erotic adventures of these two couples show us painful ways to revive passion with your long-term partner by adding sexual competition in the relationship mix. Real-life couples may not be able to handle this emotional dynamite with the hip ease of these film couples.

Yet Bob Carol Ted And Alice show modern couples how important it is to express your true feelings and face marital challenges honestly and tenderly--assuming you want to strengthen your emotional connection and spark a lasting fire of love with your intimate partner.

Charcoal Starter Fluid - Why Do People Still Use It?

When my family and I go to the beach in the summer I always see people barbecuing. That is just awesome! The one thing that always makes me cringe is when I see someone squirting a whole bottle of charcoal starter fluid all over the charcoal or wood. Then they light it up and get that big "whoosh" full of fire coming towards them just to have the fire die out within a few minutes. Now what? They have no other source for starting the fire because they depended on the starter fluid. Now they have to take the time to go back to the store and buy more starter fluid. Meanwhile at the beach there are hungry friends and family members that are getting upset.

I see no point in using starter fluid. It takes forever for your wood and/or charcoal to ignite even when you do soak them. If you are lucky enough for the wood and/or charcoal to start, then you have to grill your food over it. The smell of starter fluid is awful. Then when your food is done you can actually taste the charcoal fluid in your food. This just ruins everything. The very thing you put time and money into just went down the drain.

Many people continue to use charcoal fluid just because that is what they have always used an do not know any better. That is fine. There are others who continue to use charcoal fluid because they are too lazy to buy a chimney starter. I am guilty myself of using charcoal fluid. I used to use it all the time until I found out about chimney starters. I have been using chimney starters now for many years. When you use the chimney starter you will see how fast your fire will start. Using a chimney starter is the way to go. Try it out, you will not regret it!

Conference Mayhem Preview

The madness is nearly here. March is one of the sweetest months on the sports calendar, as the NBA and NHL gear up for the playoffs, MLB is in full spring training mode and the NFL Draft is closing in. Still, the NCAA Tournament casts the longest shadow over the month, but in order to play, teams have to get it. Their best chance to do that is in each league's conference tournament, and we take a look at those today. We'll take a look at each conference by letting you know who the favorite (or, in some instances, co-favorites) is, followed by the next tier of teams, and finally, the dark horse that could surprise and make a run to the title.

ACC Tournament

Favorite: Duke
Watch Out For: Maryland, Clemson
Dark Horse: Wake Forest

Dick Vitale will be thrilled this season because once again, the Dukies are the clear favorite in the ACC Tournament. The Blue Devils have a solid combination of offense and defense, and are in the top-20 in the nation in scoring and the top-40 in scoring defense. Most notably, they are No. 1 in the country in defending the three-point shot, making it hard for teams to catch up when Duke gets an early lead. Maryland is also gifted offensively, and is just outside the nation's top-10 in scoring offense, but their defense is lacking; they're 10th in the 12-team ACC in scoring defense.

Atlantic 10 Tournament

Favorite(s): Temple, Xavier
Watch Out For: Richmond, Dayton, Rhode Island
Dark Horse: St. Louis

The resurgence by the A-10 this season has made this possibly the most difficult conference tournament to figure out. The teams here seem to have clear identities; for example, Temple and St. Louis are 12th and 13th in the 14-team league in scoring offense, but they are a respective first and second in scoring defense. Xavier does seem to have the most complete team, with solid defense and rebounding, and a scoring offense among the top-20 in the nation

Big East Tournament

Favorite: Syracuse
Watch Out For: Villanova, West Virginia, Pittsburgh
Dark Horse: Connecticut

If the A-10 is among the most difficult of conferences to figure out heading into their tournament, the Big East is not far behind. Syracuse has been the best team all season, but West Virginia, Villanova and Pitt are not to be ignored. This 16-team behemoth of a league features a little bit of everything and has a team in the top-10 in the country in virtually every significant statistical category - Villanova, Providence and Syracuse are all in the top-10 in scoring offense; Syracuse is No. 1 in field-goal percentage and Georgetown is No. 4; Notre Dame and Marquette are in the top-10 in three-point field-goal percentage; West Virginia is in the top-10 in rebounding margin; Syracuse and Notre Dame are second and third, respectively, in assists per game; Notre Dame, Marquette and Seton Hall are in the top-10 in assist-turnover ratio; UConn, Rutgers and Syracuse are in the top-10 in blocked shots per game; and Marquette and Notre Dame are in the top-10 for fewest turnovers per game. See? We told you it's a tough league.

Big 10 Tournament

Favorite: Ohio State
Watch Out For: Purdue, Michigan State, Wisconsin
Dark Horse: Minnesota

Purdue was looking like the co-favorites next to Ohio State, but they lost Robbie Hummel, who was an all-around threat that could score and rebound with the best in the conference. So the Buckeyes, with all-everything star Evan Turner, are the clear favorites here, but it is never, ever wise to look past the Spartans from Michigan State. They wear their toughness on their sleeve, and the Tom Izzo-led squad plays together; they are in the top-five in the nation in rebounding margin, and top-10 in assists per game.

Big 12 Tournament

Favorite: Kansas
Watch Out For: Kansas State, Baylor, Missouri, Texas
Dark Horse: Oklahoma State

The Jayhawks have probably been the best team in the country from the day the season began, as evidenced in part by the fact that they outscore opponents by nearly 20 points a game, which is the most in the country. They have a complete squad that scores at a high rate, hits their shots (top-10 in field-goal percentage and three-point field-goal percentage) and plays good defense. The Big 12 is deep, so K-State and others will give KU a run for their money, but consider them one of the better bets not only to win their conference tourney, but the whole thing come early April.

Colonial Tournament

Favorite: Old Dominion
Watch Out For: Northeastern, William & Mary
Dark Horse: Virginia Commonwealth

Old Dominion is the favorite here because they do one thing better than most other teams in this conference: play defense and rebound. ODU is among the top-five in the country in both scoring defense and rebounding margin. William & Mary is also very dangerous, but for different reason. They lead the conference and are among the top-10 in the country in three-pointers made per game, and they also don't turn the ball over often; in fact, only 11 teams have fewer turnovers than they do.

Conference USA Tournament

Favorite: UTEP
Watch Out For: Memphis, UAB, Marshall
Dark Horse: Tulsa

Previously, you didn't even need to think about this one. Nobody was beating Memphis, and that was that - period. But John Calipari left for Kentucky in the offseason, and something funny happened: they lost to UTEP. The Miners are now the top team in the league, with just one conference loss, and though Memphis has played a tough schedule, they've been beaten by nearly all of their tough opponents. The Tigers have played, and fallen to, Kansas, Syracuse, UMass, Tennessee and Gonzaga. A team to specifically keep an eye on is Marshall. They're among the highest-scoring teams in the nation, and lead the country in blocked shots thanks to Hassan Whiteside, who turns away 5.5 per contest.

MAC Tournament

Favorite(s): Akron, Kent State
Watch Out For: Buffalo
Dark Horse: Central Michigan

This is not a good league overall, and it's likely that you really only need to choose between Akron and Kent State to pick your conference tournament winner. Statistically, very little separates the two schools, so the only thing to go on so far is Kent State's 87-70 win at home in late January, with the schools playing their regular season finales before getting started with conference tournament play.

Missouri Valley Tournament

Favorite: Northern Iowa
Watch Out For: Wichita State, Illinois State
Dark Horse: Missouri State

The Missouri Valley has seen better years, with Northern Iowa the obvious favorite. The reason? Defense. Only Princeton allows fewer points per game than UNI does, and they also take care of the ball well, and have the 14th-fewest turnovers per game. Keep an eye on Missouri State. They lead the conference in scoring and have wins this season over solid teams like Tulsa and St. Louis.

Mountain West Tournament

Favorite: New Mexico
Watch Out For: BYU, UNLV
Dark Horse: Utah

With its recent win over BYU, New Mexico took both games against the Cougars, and those two losses happen to be half of the season total for BYU. New Mexico has just two losses in conference play, and those came in their first two conference games. Still, BYU is exceptionally dangerous. They are in the top-five in the nation in the following statistical categories: scoring offense, scoring margin, three-point field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage while also claiming a spot in the top-10 in field-goal percentage.

Pac-10 Tournament

Favorite: California
Watch Out For: Arizona State, Washington
Dark Horse: Arizona

The Pac-10 is the worst it's been in years, with every team sporting at least nine losses, and at the end of the conference tournament, there will be only one team in the league with a possibility of having fewer than 10 losses. The most likely team to come out of the depths of the utter averageness is California. Simply put, they've been the most consistent team in the league all season even though they lost all of their most difficult non-conference games.

SEC Tournament

Favorite: Kentucky
Watch Out For: Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Mississippi State
Dark Horse: Mississippi

The SEC isn't as loaded in basketball as it is in football, but they do have one of the three or four best teams in the nation in Kentucky, and another handful of teams that has the possibility of winning their conference tournament. Most people will concentrate on Vanderbilt and Tennessee, but Mississippi State is a team that shouldn't be overlooked. They lead the conference in scoring defense, and are in the top-five in the country in field-goal defense, three-pointers made per game and blocked shots.

WAC Tournament

Favorite: Utah State
Watch Out For: New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech
Dark Horse: Nevada

Utah State leads the conference and is the easy favorite to win its tournament, and besides the fact they have one very good win against BYU, a look at the numbers is explanation enough. They lead the WAC in scoring defense, scoring margin, field-goal percentage, field-goal defense, three-point field-goal percentage (they lead the nation), free-throw percentage, rebounding margin, assists per game, assist-turnover ratio, turnover margin and fewest turnovers per game.

West Coast Tournament

Favorite(s): Gonzaga, St. Mary's
Watch Out For: Portland
Dark Horse: Loyola Marymount

There's a familiar name at the top of the WCC, and that is Gonzaga. While they certainly can be considered highly dangerous, anyone who has paid attention to the conference in recent years (we know you're out there) knows that St. Mary's is equally as dangerous, due to their long-range shooting. The Gaels lead the conference in three-point shots made as well as three-point percentage.

TLC's OVERHAULIN' Transforms Junk Cars Into Works of Art With a New Twist.

With the recent publicity of automotive reality shows like Orange County Choppers, Monster Garage, and MTV's Pimp My Ride TLC (The Learning Channel) has launched their own version. Overhaulin' is similar to Pimp My Ride, but they don't have a huge music celebrity like Exzibit. They instead use a legendary automotive designer named Chip Foose and give it a twist - they keep the beneficiary of the newly remade car completely in the dark about what is happening to their car.

As quoted in the New York Times, "OVERHAULIN' revs the makeover-
genre engine with an automotive twist." In the show, Chip Foose leads a team of top mechanics and automotive professionals whom completely redesign and rebuild the automobile into a work of art. This qualifies as a frame off restoration in automotive circles - the highest level. The difficulty is that the project car has to be completed in less than 1 week and various tactics are used to keep the unsuspecting automobile owner in the dark. Most of the time they resort to impersonating the police, private detectives, repo men, etc...all the while, using the automobile owner's closest friends to make the stories more believable.

Chip designs each project car before the team starts. Basically the car is recreated. Top of the line equipment is installed (Power windows, performance brakes, top-of-the-line engines, and of course unbelievable sound systems). According to industry professionals a rebuild like this would normally run $100,000 plus. So, it is no wonder the overhauled recipients cry tears of joy when their new autos are revealed. This completely rebuilt automobile is something they could never afford to do. Every redesign takes the owners likes, interests, and relatives input along with Chip Foose's amazing ideas to make sure the owners are more than pleasantly surprised.

"In each episode, Chip Foose and his team watch the videotape of the car's
owner as he or she talks about the car and his or her dreams for it."

Some shows have used celebrities for the Overhaulin' victim. Every show has been extremely exciting and this is a show worth watching for anyone that has automotive inclinations and one day dreams of having a fantasy overhaul. Some of the stories of loyalty and acts of kindness and benevolence by the selected owners can really humble you and bring tears to your eyes. Overhaulin' is a great show and definitely worth your time - if nothing else, it will give you great ideas to dream about!

David Maillie is an alumni of Cornell University and specializes in automotive safety products and information. He holds numerous patents and awards for his patented headlight cleaner and restorer. For more information please visit: http://www.mdwholesale.com

A Current Event - Abortion - A Word For President Barack Obama, the Supreme Court, and America

Hey President Barack Obama, the U.S. Supreme Court, and America:

Abortion is murder. There are no two ways about it. It is simply and plainly murder. It is the taking of human life with no lawful justification. For I assure you that the U.S. Supreme Court's judgment (Roe versus Wade) that abortion is "in alignment to the Constitutional", and therefore "legal" will mean nothing on that day we stand before God.

Mr. President, you signed an executive order reinstating federal funds for the promotion of murder. This sir is murder.

Now tell me sir, how can you expect to sow murder on one hand and receive God's blessing on another? Or do you think you can lead this great nation without His aide? Especially knowing all the while that murder is contrary to Him. For He is a God of justice and life. Yes, the judgment of death is fitting for those worthy by God's law of execution, but the most innocent of persons, the unborn, or new born child, how is it that they are guilty of the death penalty? One example of those worth of the judgment of execution by law is our own Supreme Court Justices who pollute God's law and call the murder of the innocent acceptable and "legal". Yes, to this point they have escaped judgment, but they will have their day before God Almighty, and if they do not cry out for the hope of the gospel in repentance, and admit their sin, and turn from their error, they will never see His kingdom, but eternal judgment will be their lot, as it will be the lot of all who love wickedness.

Mr. President, if you would have your name be great, then you must think and behave as a great man would, and that is not to murder the innocent, but rather to fight for the innocent and punish the guilty. Do you think sir that you can lead this people into safety and prosperity and not promote true judgment? If you do sir, then you are only "blowing smoke", which is a common thing for a politician to do, but it will not earn you God's favor, nor bring this nation into God's blessing. I warn you sir, you can not please men and God both, you need to make up your mind whose team you are on. For I assure you, no murderer, nor murderous nation will inherit eternal life, nor have God's blessing in this present life.

Consider:

  • Exodus 20:13---(NKJV) You shall not murder.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (NKJV) Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, no adulterers, no homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioner will inherit the kingdom of God. (and I will add one to the list, the murders of the unborn of the world)
  • 1 John 2:22 (NKJV) But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going for the darkness has blinded him. (such are all that who murder the unborn)
  • 1 John 3:7 (NKJV) Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning... (murder of the unborn is sin Mr. President, and America)
  • 1 John 3:14 (NKJV) We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. (to kill your neighbor (unborn or born) without lawful justification is not to love him)
  • 1 John 3:20 (NKJV) If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar, for he who does no love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? (Look on the web, you can find pictures of the little ones you murder. Some burned with salt, others chopped to pieces, others who brains are sucked out so that they can be drug from the womb. I tell you Mr. President and America, they are real, and the corpses testify against you Mr. President, and the U.S. Supreme Court, and you America, for you have sanctioned their murder)

College Football Futility Rankings - Week 3 - Musings on Losing

It is still possible to find Ann Arbor, MI on the map. The place does exist and is filled with kind, caring and genuine people who are exceptionally disappointed. Following a 39-7 thrashing to a team called the Ducks, one of American Football's flagship programs is in the dumper.

Losing is not the sole domain of traditional doormat schools. With the Big House feeling like a morgue, the Oregon Ducks completely dominated the proud Wolverines in their own stadium - effectively winning this game in fewer than 30 minutes. Faced with the prospect of achieving 0-3 with a home game next week against a hungry Notre Dame team, the Wolverine faithful are having trouble with their collective digestive system.

Breakfast on Sunday morning in Michigan was a quiet time - filled with reflection and moral questioning of the higher power. Whether forgiveness of past sins was part of the exercise is a matter of personal practice, but after deep spiritual reflection, the healing process began. And it began with the traditional search for a scapegoat.

Scapegoating may be warranted in this case, but the process is worth noting as a treasured American tradition. Amid reports of Ohio State fans purchasing the team gear of Appalachian State, the inhabitants of the Big House are after a big head to stick on the pike of this losing season. The Michigan coaching staff - with necks firmly on the proverbial chopping block - insisted after the Oregon loss that nothing can keep them down. Well. the ire 109,000 people might. A rebound win against surprisingly winless Notre Dame won't quite salve the wounds that have opened in the first two weeks of September. Lengthening the odds for a short term fix, the Blue and Maize have to face the Irish without their starting quarterback, who suffered a leg injury.

So as the Canada Geese begin to think about flying south - or looking for a golf course - to spend the winter, the mighty Michigan Wolverines haven't quite qualified for a place on the Futility Rankings. Last week's loss to a really small school caused Michigan to exit the AP rankings entirely. Saturday's loss finds the Wolverines on a rapid transit decent into college football's third world of teams that want just a taste of what it is to be nationally recognized for football success. One more loss might just find 'em all the way into Futility's top ten.

But for now, here is the Michigan Wolverine-free version of the Futility Rankings for Week 3. And watch the Notre Dame Michigan game this week for the best battle of winless teams in half a century. This is what makes losing as interesting as winning - watching who can come back and who just keeps flailing away in the waters of hopelessness.

1. Duke

Having hit midseason form in it's second game, the Bluish Devils are solidly on their way towards a repeat of last year's perfectly futile (and winless) season. Losing to Virginia 24-13 gets the Devil's ACC season off to a shining start. After clawing to within a couple points at 17-13 in the third quarter, the Devils regrouped to give up a fourth quarter touchdown to seal the loss. The Blew Devils now look forward to a trip to Evanston and a game against Northwestern. The Wildcats handled their early season well earning wins against Northeastern and Nevada, so they are looking for a third tune up game before opening the Big 10 season. Still, Duke has a shot in that the Wildcats might just be looking past 'em to Northwestern's September 22 date at Ohio State. If Duke fails here, it might be another three years before they can post a win over a football school.

2. Iowa State

The big surprise of the 2007 season is the rapid decent of the Iowa State Cyclones into second position. This is really turning into a banner year for the Cyclones and opens up the possibility of two perfect seasons going 1-2 in the final rankings. This is a school from the powerhouse Big 12 that has achieved the impossible by losing to both Kent State and Northern Iowa in consecutive weeks. The best hope for Iowa State rests on September 22 with a game against Toledo. Most schools that find their way into the Futility Rankings are heavily focused on basketball. Iowa State is focused simply on losing.

3. Syracuse

A trip to the heartland brings respect for those that work so hard feed this great nation. Seeing farmers hard at their work inspires the soul and calls all Americans to be better people. If you are a football team, a trip to the heartland can bring about an inspiring and humiliating loss. Syracuse held up it's end of this deal on Saturday by dutifully showing up to get whacked 35-0 by the Iowa Hawkeyes. This game was not as close as that score might indicate. The Hawkeyes walked up and down the field and couldn't even give up a mercy field goal. Are the Hawkeyes that tough?

This does set up an interesting match this Saturday, though as the Orange continue their waltz through the Big 10 by hosting Illinois. In these dances, the other teams usually lead. The Orange lose this one and they stand to challenge for the Futility title.

4. Vanderbilt

The Vanderbilt Commodores were snuffed at home by Alabama this past Saturday, earning them a jump to #4. A trip to play Vandy usually results in a side-trip to one of Nashville's better music establishments and provides much needed 'down-time.' The SEC won't ever bounce Vandy out of the league for not being serious because everyone needs a break now and then. Besides, Hawaii is already in a conference. Up next for Vanderbilt is a home game against Ole Miss. Miss this one and Vandy is solidly entrenched in Futility's worst five.

5. Stanford

In a perfect follow up to their opening day loss to UCLA, the Cardinal gave football fans a break on Saturday by not playing. But look for Stanford to slide down the Futility Rankings should they come out and give - Oregon - a game on the 22nd. The Ducks though, are fresh off skewering once proud Michigan and unfortunately for the Cardinal, should have the sense to take this game seriously.

6. New Mexico State

How does a team score 38 points and still lose? Besides the obvious 'no defense' answer, well.. there is no other answer. The Aggies just ain't 'got it.' After giving up a game's worth of points in the 2nd half, the Aggies were cooked and the University of New Mexico sent it's crowd home happy with a victory over their in-state rival. If they live in Albuquerque, it was the least they could do.

7. Illinois

The whimpering ones managed a resounding 21-0 victory against Western Illinois. When your program is in doubt, the administrative types schedule games against small, in-state schools. Unfortunately, for Illinois, the 'Leathernecks' of Western IU, kept it close for a half. When the Illini found a running game, it was over.

Playing small in-state schools is a disturbing trend. Sort of like NASCAR where a teammate can help you win, Illinois looked for a much weaker opponent to get well. The home state schools help out by sending a bunch of the student body to play football against the bigger school. This is about the only case that can be made for paying players at the college level. If you are going to humiliate yourself in front of your state's football fans, you deserve to be paid. Ohio State opened it's season against superpowers Youngstown State and Akron with the expectation that these games would somehow help. At least the Illini opened against Missouri. The Champaign boys now get a trip up to NY to play Syracuse. After double checking their directions, the blue & orange have a shot if they can find the locker room.

8. Army

Following the opening game loss to supreme power Akron, Army fought back to claim a 14-7 victory over Rhode Island last Saturday. On deck for the Knights is defending ACC Champ Wake Forest who comes off a smarting loss to Nebraska. Playing a hungry team is never a good sign if you are trying to break a losing streak, and Army is playing this one on the road.

9. North Carolina

The Heels pulled off an upset on Saturday with a 34-31 victory over East Carolina. One more win and the Baby Blues are gonna get bounced right out of the top ten. But they have a solid chance to retain their coveted spot with a Saturday date with Virginia. The Cadavaliers swatted down Duke last week and are looking to mop up a win against yet another basketball school.

10. North Carolina State

A warm and hearty greeting and welcome to the Wolfpack of North Carolina State! Welcome to their first appearance in the hallowed pages of futility. Starting the season 0-2 is no dishonor in itself. Michigan and Notre Dame are both 0-2. However the Wolfpack achieved their lofty status, not by virtue of losing to Boston College, but by finding a way to loose to Central Florida as well. The wizards of scheduling are now bringing in Wofford - a school that plays in the same division as Appalachian State and like the Mountaineers are currently 2-0. If this game is at all exciting, then NC State should retain a place in the Futility Rankings and begin making it's run towards a top five finish.

Honorable Mention

UCONN

With two wins under their belts, there just isn't room on the list for UCONN - especially when NCState is trying to break in. However, this is a perfect example of a marginally successful program trying to shoot itself in the foot. With wins over Duke and Maine, UCONN now faces the Temple Owls before traveling to Pitt for a game against the Panthers. UCONN did an excellent job crafting the schedule to get their program vertical, get fans interested and put a winning record in the books. Why then did the wizards in the Athletic Department schedule Louisville for homecoming? Invite a bunch of alumni and parents for a big celebration against a top tier school? When you set your fans up for your own knock-out, it is tough for them to take you seriously again. In any event, 'Sayonara' for now to the Huskies... we'll be watching!

Kansas

Jayhawk fans may be delirious over a possible 4-0 start. That is until one looks at the schedule. The Hawks opening schedule began with wins over Central Michigan, SE Louisiana, and are followed by tilts with Toledo and Florida International. Anything other than 4-0 is going to get serious attention.

Michigan

The Sages of Sport invite you to consider what will happen if the Fighting Irish put a good hurt on the boys in Blue. Whatever your football passions, don't miss this game. Never has there been a more interesting match up between two 0-2 teams. The Wolverines still have to play out the schedule that they thought was the path to January 2 and the BCS pinnacle. Unfortunately, their current trajectory might take them to the Comedy Club.

4 Fantastic Ideas For New Moon Party Favors

This fall a lot fans will be anxiously awaiting the release of the second installment of the Twilight movies, New Moon, this November. The movies are part of a growing cultural phenomenon spurred by the original Twilight book series. The books tell the tale of angst ridden teen Bella who come to live with her estranged father only to meet the vampire who would change her life. The story has become popular since it has something for everyone. For guys there is the horror element and for girls young and old there is the epic romance told with an amazing emotional depth. One of the ways many fans will be celebrating this year will be by throwing Twilight themed New Moon parties. These can be birthday parties, a Halloween get together, or just simply a movie release party. One of the important things needed to make a party like this successful are great party favors. If you are at a loss for what will be appropriate, here are some great suggestions to help you get started.

A great suggestion is edible favors. These are snacks and treat that will match the theme of your party and will be readily enjoyed by guests right at the party or at home when the party is over. There are several that you can make yourself or you can order for your get together. There are many great options. One is red velvet cupcakes. These are red colored cakes that will perfectly match New Moon's Vampire theme. However New Moon also introduces werewolves. There are very creative recipes like Doggie kibble that you can also serve. Of course you can also give bags of fake edible blood. There recipes for all of these foods that you can find on the internet. For items you can order a unique option is chocolate covered apples.

A great idea is to use New Moon movie merchandise. This fall there is definitely going to be feud between fans of Bella's werewolf friend and second love interest, Jacob and those that still support the vampire Edward Cullen. You can give movie posters, buttons, and other promotional gear. However retailers are also coming up with one of a kind gear such as lip balm, candy tins, even jewelry. Look on the internet to find special items that you may not be able to find anywhere else.

Another place to look for inspiration is the book itself. The motif for the cover of New Moon is a tulip. So try to give favors that involve the tulip motif. This can magnets, stationary, pens, picture frames or what else you can come up with. It is important that you use your imagination to find items that will not only match the theme but actually be interesting. You can also give interesting items such as tulip candle holders, bath products, or other tulip shaped gifts. Also try to look for items that give a modern twist on the tulip motif.

Try giving themed New Moon minigames. It can be anything from small puzzles to even trivia. The internet is once again your best ally as you will surely find interesting items that you may not be able to find in normal stores. Along with games also see about giving out New Moon themed toys or items that reflect the werewolf and vampire themes in the book.

Belle Boyd the Civil War Spy

Belle Boyd, La Belle Rebelle, (May 9, 1843 - June 11, 1900) was a Confederate darling.

Young, attractive Belle Boyd was a Confederate spy. Belle was born in Martinsburg, Virginia (Martinsburg is now part of West Virginia) and was only seventeen when the Civil War started. She had a knack for listening in on the conversations of Union officers who patronized her father's Front Royal hotel. Her familiarity with the countryside of the Shenandoah Valley provided the Confederates with valuable information in the spring of 1862.

Young Belle was an enthusiastic Confederate. The year before her spying activity began, Belle shot to death an intoxicated Yankee soldier who was attempting to raise the Stars and Stripes over her Martinsburg home. She was arrested and put on trial for murder. Belle's defense was justifiable homicide and she was acquitted, free to go on her way.

Belle Boyd provided General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson and General Ashby Turner with important information during Stonewall's Shenandoah Valley Campaign, that helped with the capture of Front Royal, Virginia on May 23, 1862. Belle warned the Confederates they should move fast so they could cross bridges before Yankee soldiers destroyed them.

In appreciation for her information and spy service regarding Union troop movement during the Valley Campaign, Stonewall Jackson gave Belle Boyd the rank of captain and made her an honorary member of his staff as an aide-de-camp. Jackson wrote to the young Belle (the "La Belle Rebelle" as a French war correspondent called her); "I thank you, for myself and for the army, for the immense service that you have rendered your country today." Boyd was a brave young lady, she served Colonel John S. Mosby and his guerillas as a scout and courier. Once while on a mission, Yankees shot bullet holes through her skirt.

Belle's lover gave her away as a spy. On July 29, 1862 she was arrested on order of United States Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton. She spent a month in Old Capital Prison in Washington before being released in a prisoner exchange.

Belle was arrested for a third time in June, 1863 and remained in jail until being released the following December. She had contracted typhoid, so she sailed to Europe to improve her health and also to deliver some letters for Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Belle then returned from Europe on a blockade runner, but this ship was captured by a Union warship.

With her capture, things may have been looking grim for the young, attractive Confederate spy La Belle Rebelle. Maybe she would be imprisoned, or even executed, but her luck had not run out. Union Captain Samuel Hardinge was put in command of Belle's blockade runner, his duty being to take the ship to the North.

Quickly, Captain Hardinge fell under the charms and spell of beautiful Belle. Hardinge let Belle and the blockade runner's captain, escape to Canada, they then made their way to England.

Captain Hardinge, lost in love as he was for spy La Belle Rebelle, was court-martialed and discharged from the Union navy. He followed Boyd to England and the two love-birds were married in August, 1864. Belle Boyd had won a romantic victory by marrying her Yankee captor.

In England, Belle Boyd wrote an account of her spy activities entitled, Belle Boyd in Camp and Prison and she began a stage career. Sadly, the love story of the Confederate La Belle Rebelle and the Union captain would soon end abruptly with Samuel Hardinge's death in 1865. Belle Boyd made her way back to the United States in 1868 and continued her career as an actress, but also gave lectures about her exciting life.

Belle Boyd died in 1900 while on a lecture tour in Wisconsin.

The 7 Most Common Basketball Shots

Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world, both to play and watch. For players, though it can be more of an art form than an athletic endeavor. Playing the game of basketball requires a high level of physical fitness, intricate moves and mental skills that all combine to create points on the court. Far from its humble beginnings, basketball has reached super star status.

Superstar or not, however, the basics are still the most important aspects in the game of basketball. If you want to be good at the game, you have to know the rules and have the skills. It also helps to develop a bag of tricks, and being a top-notch shooter is one of the best ways to see great results on the scoreboard. Here are the seven most common shots in basketball. Try them, practice them, bring them to your game. You will love the results.

1. The Lay-Up The lay-up is one of the simplest shots in basketball and is used in one of two different situations during a game: - When you are under the ring and you get the ball while shooting through the basket. - When you dribble the ball through a crowd and wind up under the net.

2. The One-Handed Underhand This shot must be practiced - a lot - before being put to the test in a game, because it is a tough one. Additionally, you can't use the one-handed underhand when you are in a set position.

3. The Two-Handed Set The two-handed set is usually saved for long-range opportunities. This shot is not as common today as it used to be. The most well-known player to make this shot popular was Bob McDermott, who became famous for his ability to shoot from any place in the inside court.

4. The One-Handed Set The one-handed set is another one of the basics. It has the same good points as the two-handed set but it gives you improved speed.

5. The Jump Shot The jump shot almost always turns into points on the scoreboard. This shot is often paired with a fake, and it is popular with current basketball players of all levels.

6. The Hook Shot The hook shot can be paired with a number of different moves on the court, so it is a highly versatile basketball shot that can be put into play in distances from mid-range to short-range.

7. The Free Throw Everyone knows the free throw; it's the one where the rest of the players stand around and watch. A player gets a free throw when they have been fouled by a player on the opposing team, and they make this shot from the free throw line. To be considered good at the free throw, you have to make at least 8 out of 10 of these shots.

These are the seven most common shots in basketball, and although there are more, some others require detailed combinations and variations in skill levels. These can be learned by the beginner and practiced to perfection. For all of these shots, and every other move in the game of basketball, the best thing to do is practice and constantly update your skills.

Are Free Foreclosure Listings Worthy of Your Consideration?

Free foreclosure listings are worth your time if you want to be able to keep your pulse on the real estate market. Whether you are looking for just one house for your yourself or considering a career in the real estate field, keeping track of possibly available properties in the slight chance that you might make an investment with one of them.

The fact of the matter is that you can turn that one real estate search into a career within the field. The chances of you making millions in the real estate game are indeed real. Suzanne Kosmas, a newly elected Congresswoman from the state of Florida made millions in the real estate business before she came to Congress. She was not afraid to use some of that personal wealth to defeat Tom Feeney either. I'm sure Suzanne Kosmas dealt with a few foreclosed properties during her time in real estate. The chances of her having bought a few of these properties is likely very good. They can become a very good and solid asset if properly managed.

The list of properties within a community that have run into financial difficulty can also include building that hold franchises, commercial properties. We are not just talking about residential properties when it comes to the mortgage crisis. We could just as well be talking about the commercial properties where two or three Baskin Robbins franchises are run out of down in Louisiana. We could just as easily be talking about farmhouses that Gainesville, Georgia that have been foreclosed upon as well.

Such properties and information should be made available to potential investors. Such properties are vital to the economy because farmers supply a lot of the material that a company like Cargill uses in order to create jobs. If these farms are out of commission or at least in limbo, this could mean extreme job losses for the people who live in that region of Georgia.

By the way, by researching and comparing the best free home foreclosure listings services in the market, you will be able to determine the one that meets your specific requirements, plus the free or cheaper options. This way you will save time through up to date foreclosure listings and money by getting better results over your investment.

How to Get a Marriage Like Sandra Bullock & Jesse James

The outpouring of emotion and support for each other recently in various public events can cause us normal (and by normal I mean not Hollywood stars) folks to have thoughts of inspiration as well a jealousy. Inspiration because I would like to strive to have in my marriage more of what they have, and jealousy because I wish I had it already and didn't have to work at it. Sandra said recently that her and Jesse's marriage is strong because she knows he has her back.

So, what is it that they have? PASSION! They have passion. They've had their share of personal problems to deal with and they have been able to do just that, deal with them. The reason for that is having passion and connection in a marriage will give you the ability to squash any challenges that might come up.

For instance, if a marriage or relationship is having problems and there is no feeling of passion or connection even the smallest of problems are going to feel huge. What if the couple in that same situation have to deal a large problem? Many times, that's when the relationship fails.

You will find that the more connected you are to your partner, the more power you will have to heal a broken relationship. Maybe your relationship isn't broken, maybe it's just a little bent or dinged up, focus on increasing the passion and it will get stronger everyday. It's at that point the two of you won't sweat the obstacles that life deals out because you will know you can trust each other, and your relationship, so you can power through.

Here's my challenge for you: Take some time and think of two ways to put some PASSION back in your marriage or relationship, and take action and do them. Maybe it will be the way you can insure that you've got each others back the next time a problem pops up.

Turn Adversity Into Opportunities - Losing Dad at Age 7, Fighting Abuse, Becoming an Entrepreneur

Anthony Bonanzino was born in a lower middle-class Catholic family in West Haven, Connecticut. "My mother was a waitress, working two jobs; there was no, as I call it, 'silver spoon.'" Tony's father worked the graveyard shift at the post office. Anthony was only seven years old when he lost his father.

Tony said his father's death was "nothing unusual, it happens all the time; unfortunately he passed away when he was 44." Tony indicated that he was totally devastated by his father's death, and by his own admission he became incorrigible. He was expelled from a Catholic school in the fourth grade. Tony had gotten into some minor trouble with the law for mischievous behavior.

For young Bonanzino losing a father at age seven was tough. Then his leaving home and going to a Home for Fatherless Boy's was life changing to young Tony.

Tony shared this journey past his personal loss and his success story:

"Fortunately, there was a detective on the West Haven, Connecticut police force, who knew me well enough by that point, because I had gotten into so many minor troubles. He wanted to help; he found a school, a free, private school for fatherless boys, in Philadelphia."

The school for fatherless boys accepted Tony Bonanzino. The Girard School demanded hard work and unquestioned respect for the teachers, and imposed strict discipline. When he arrived at the school Tony described having anger at the world, but he turned his life around in the eighth grade.

The importance of having mentors in his life was especially important to Dr. Tony Bonanzino. Tony gave a specific example of a mentor that changed his life, Mr. Campos. He said that having mentors shortened the learning cycle, helped them to get out of problems and avoid other problems, and in their opinion made them stronger, as well as built them as good leaders.

Tony Bonanzino specifically shared a story about one of his mentors: Mr. Campos, his eighth grade English teacher, who "helped change my life" by bringing about a major paradigm shift in his attitude. At the Girard School, discipline was rigidly enforced. Tony had raised his hand to strike Mr. Campos, but was instead "literally knocked out" by the teacher's solid blow. Upon his waking up, Tony "was sent to the office," where he "was required to explain what I had done." In the school head office Tony "was paddled, and then sent back to the classroom to apologize to my class and to Mr. Campo." His teacher accepted the apology and asked young Tony "to remain after class for a minute." Mr. Campo said to Tony, "You know, you have more to offer than what you are giving right now. Just think about that." Campo became one of Tony's mentors.

Bonanzino then graduated from high school with Honors from the Girard School. He went on to junior college "for a year and played on the ice hockey team," but he was not really focused on his education. Tony said he just "took a year off. I went to Boston University for a period, and then I joined the Air Force." He was trained for a year in Mandarin Chinese and then was assigned for a few months to translate military broadcasts, pilot-to-pilot, and ground-to-pilot communications from Mandarin to English.

As a result of the Vietnam conflict was over and the military was downsizing, Tony was allowed to leave the Air Force early, with full "G.I. Bill" benefits, including educational benefits. "At the time, full benefits meant full benefits." He could focus on his studies. Tony graduated from college with a degree in Biology and a concentration in Microbiology. After working for four years, he returned to get a Master's degree in Operations Management.

Anthony "Tony" then went to work for Bayer AG, the large German pharmaceutical company. He described a "heavily dictatorial" management style. Bonanzino indicated that he was a "pretty unhappy person because the work violated my core values, my beliefs."

Bonanzino was especially deplored what what he perceived to be the company's intentional mistreatment of employees. Tony described his frustration when his attempts to "build the spirit and camaraderie" of his team within Bayer were thwarted by its "intransigent management."

Tony said, "I was in a very challenging environment, not technically challenging, but emotionally challenging, because my core belief was based on respect of the individual." But now he found himself in "an environment that was highly egocentric, debilitating in its treatment of people, and really, a violation of my core beliefs."

Bonanzino then commented, "I prostituted myself." Tony described the challenge of remaining in such "a debilitating, almost evil, environment for so many years, instead of having the courage to walk away." He added that staying was "an extraordinarily difficult thing, and it takes a toll on you. It truly takes a toll."

Tony was sent to Spokane, Washington for what was to be a short term assignment at the Bayer subsidiary, Hollister-Stier Labs, a small pharmaceutical and bio-technology company. The assignment became permanent. But, when Bayer AG announced that it would sell Hollister-Stier Laboratories, Tony then decided to lead a team to negotiate with Bayer for a leveraged buyout of Hollister-Stier Laboratories.

Dealing with Bayer AG's corporate abuse was difficult for Bonanzino. Tony has always fought hard for fair treatment and now he could change that for himself and his fellow employees. He bought out the company form Bayer AG and totally changed the business philosophy of Hollister-Stier to reflect an enlightened and more "servant leader" style.

Dr. Bonanzino became the new President and CEO and immediately restructured the company, totally changing the firm's management style. He indicated that he eliminated everything he perceived as employee abuse and invited input from his employees. In the process he turned an unprofitable subsidiary of Bayer AG into a strong and profitable separate company with its own corporate identity.

Bonanzino earned his Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University, in Spokane, Washington. He continues to invest a great deal of his time in community projects and various non-profit organizations. He coaches young people in various team sports and still teaches one class each semester at the School of Business at Gonzaga University. He shared that his leveraged buyout of Hollister-Stier Labs is a case study at the Gonzaga School of Business. I initially interviewed Dr. Tony Bonanzino for almost two hours at his home in Spokane, Washington.

Dr. Bonanzino ran his successful firm, Hollister-Stier Laboratories, while serving in a number of leadership posts in the Spokane business community. He has served a both President and Chairman of the Spokane Regional Chamber of Commerce. Tony Bonanzino recently sold Hollister-Stier Laboratories to a major international firm. Dr. Bonanzino is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute for Systems Medicine.

Distressed Debt Waterfall?

Dana Perino from the Bush administration tried to calm fears yesterday with her soothing statements.. but the facts are a lot different. It should come as no surprise that there's more distressed debt trading right now than at any other time in history - approx $184 billion worth, and you know what..probably a heck of a lot more that is lurking around...With all the cheap money that flowed all over the globe is it surprising.. VC firms buying companies thinking they will pay top dollar and sell it to the next guy.. or how about real estate developers selling houses to speculators that going to sell to someone else...

It has been simply insane!

Historically, these large levels of distressed debt have preceded record numbers of bankruptcy filings. Default ratios have peaked in the past...usually 12-24 months after the distressed-securities ratios reach their heights. Thus... both the level of junk debt and the classification of distressed securities can be viewed as leading indicators and a clue to what we might expect in 2009 and possibly more so in the future.

The total of distressed has grown approximately 11.5% since the last bankruptcy boom. I read a report that the current level of distressed debt could suggest nearly $97 billion in defaults in 2009.
The problem is so pressing that one out of every three junk bonds is now trading at "distressed levels".

This is defined as an interest rate that's 1,000 basis points or more above comparable Treasury securities.

I will give you a scary fact...potentially 33% of the junk bonds out on the market aren't worth the paper that they're printed on. Nouriel Roubini might be more correct when he upgraded his estimate of losses in this credit crisis to 2 trillion dollars.

I will leave you on a more positive note... This to will end... The world will not end...and More so there will be tremendous oppurtunities for prudent investors in the distressed debt field.

Living With the Dead on Day of the Dead in Mexico

While North America Celebrates Halloween with costumes and candy, antiquated traditions in Mexico call for reunions of families and their dead loved ones. During three days, October 31st, November 1st & 2nd, explicit rites are practiced faithfully. They occur in cemeteries and in their homes, amid flower bouquets, banquets of bread and ghostly candies adorned with skulls. The candies are called Muertos (the dead) and are looked upon as supernatural guardians. It is said that when the dead visit, they also enjoy their favorite food and drinks called "ofrendas," lavishly laid out on the alters or shrines made for them.

In the days leading to the festivities, families begin collecting special dishes and treats in which the departed spirits liked the most when they were alive. They use the best chocolate for the 'mole', fresh eggs and flower for the baked bread called 'Pan De Muerto,' fruits, vegetables and even cigarettes for those who smoked. Votive candles are left with the flame on day and night, which illuminate the decorative flowers 'Flor de Muertos' (flower of the dead,) which adorn the alters and graves. Skeletons carved from wood and dressed for a party appear at every corner, ready to celebrate.

Some villagers have been celebrating three thousand years of Mexican History on this day, "Dia De Los Muertos." There is a melancholy sound that fills the squares and streets. The Day of the dead is a spiritual, intense vigil connecting the souls of the living and the dead. The most authentic all night vigils are held in the state of Michoacan where the celebration turns into a fiesta with endless camera flashes clicking away.

The 1st is to mourn the children and the 2nd is for the mourning of adults. All of Mexico gears up for these festivities. In the village of Patzcuaro, the people spend the whole year preparing crafts and goods to sell during the celebration.

Death and dying, like living, are family affairs. What we euphemistically refer to as "the remains," lie in state in the house of the bereaved family member house for several days. Traditionally, the gravestone is erected about a week after burial and it is not until this ceremony that closure is achieve, but even this is not "adios," only "hasta el dia": El Di de Los Muertos, The Day Of The Dead.

There are many traditional rituals in Mexico with the Day Of The Dead being one of the favorites.

Making Money With Arts & Crafts

As our economy continues to decline and rising unemployment rates continue to increase many Americans have been scrambling for alternatives to making some extra cash , but you are not alone! Many opportunists are well aware of your need and are quite willing to help you part with your hard earned money by offering over blown income claims. You can protect your self by just doing a little research and using a little common sense.

Do you have a hobby? Most of us do! And if you are good at it, you can turn it into a money making opportunity! The Arts & Crafts industry contributes 10's of billions of dollars to the U.S. economy every year and this may be your opportunity to grab a piece of the pie. Let's take Arts & Crafts as a fine example for making money! What I'm talking about is things you have made with your own hands using your imagination and skill. When making money with Arts & Crafts you should consider a few things in your search such as what you are good at, what can you can do and what do you enjoy.

Everything sells and thousands of crafters and artist make a nice living doing what they enjoy. Artist and crafters all over the world sell candles, rugs, figures, pottery, quilts, photos, bird houses, soap and the list goes on and on. So what can you make?

I believe in doing what I say! So let me share with you a little story of how I make money with crafts. Now keep in mind I am in no way an artist or even a crafter! I just know how to be creative and one day when I was at the Dollar store (You know everything for $1.00) I was looking at some little cowboy figures riding a horse about 8 inches tall. I talked to the lady at the counter and asked how many she had, she said she had 100 of them and after a little negotiation I got them for $0.72 cents each.

Now comes the creative stuff, on my way home I stopped off at a local saw mill and purchased some cedar log scraps and took them home. With a little sawing, sanding and some varnish I made 100 little wooden bases for my cowboys. After drying I epoxied my cowboys on their bases and hand signed each one with my name and date.

I had 8 sets of 12 different little cowboys along with a few duplicates and the following weekend I went to the flea market and set up shop. I sold my cowboys for $12.95 each and sold out that weekend. I had about 20 Hours into this project, spent $72.00 on my cowboys, $18.00 on wood scrap, $15.00 in material and $35.00 for my space rent. My net profit for this project was $1,155.

I hope this gets your creative juices flowing on what you can do with Arts & Crafts.

You will find many of sources to sell your Arts & Crafts such as:

  1. Online with Craigslist for free.
  2. At flea markets.
  3. Craft fairs.
To your success!

Autumnal Equinox 2009 - When Light and Dark Are Equal

The Autumnal Equinox is when the dark of night announces it has caught up with the light of day, it is now equal. The word "equinox" originates from the Latin word aequus (equal) and nox (night). There is balance, even if for one 24 hour period. The tilt of Earth's axis is slanting neither toward nor away from the Sun. The Sun is vertical above the equator. In the Northern Hemisphere this occurs on September 22nd.

The Autumnal Equinox and You

The Autumnal Equinox at a personal level symbolizes balance, when your dark twin and enlightened self walk side by side, respecting each other's strength and purpose. Your dark twin is not in the shadows much less invisible today, but in full regalia. And likewise, your enlightened nature is attired most beautifully. There is peace.

Devil or Spiritual Teacher

Here's how the game of relationships and personal growth gets played out. There are two of you inhabiting your body, you that is out front and your dark side that lurks in the background. Depending on your perception, which really is about your stage of awareness, you could see this twin as the evil devil trying to cause you harm or as your spiritual teacher.

Its purpose is to test you, to find your weaknesses and to keep presenting them to you until finally you become strong and lay them aside. And when you are weak, it takes control of your body and you feel bad about yourself. When you are strong, you're in charge and feel really good about yourself. "Who's in charge?" is always your question.

Physical Addictions

The weaknesses I am referring to are commonly called addictions. Copious amounts of drugs to put you to sleep so your dark side can take over; or excessive alcohol to push you out of control again for your dark side to take over, sometimes quite violently; or to pull you into the donut shop to fill you up with chocolate creams; or to become insatiable with your desire for sex, as the dark side never gets full.

Emotional Addictions

That's just the physical addictions, how about the emotional addictions of having to be in a relationship no matter how bad it is, rather than be alone with your own dark side? At least when you are in a relationship, your dark side can battle and challenge the other person, and sometimes leave you alone.

How about your fits of anger, depression, blame, or other emotional dramas? You can get so caught up in these emotional scenarios, you fail to realize, that the people and situations are presented to test you and for you to emotionally grow and balance yourself.

Mental Addictions

If you master your physical and emotional addictions, you might think you might be through. But no, your dark side twin will continually tempt you with power, greed and fame which you find irresistible and succumb to in a heartbeat, at least for awhile until you discover it's fools gold.

Spiritual Addictions

There are even spiritual addictions, becoming a martyr, over sacrificing; wearing yourself to a frazzle to the point you need to save yourself. Here's a clue, you have to include yourself, become inclusive.

Evaluate Yourself on Autumnal Equinox

The Autumnal Equinox is a day to evaluate you, along the path of enlightenment. How much influence has your dark side had over you, leading you astray every second it can? And how much are you in control? That's the real battle, the real war inside of you.

Game of Life

First, just awaken to that's what the game of life is about. Games keep you entertained, keeping you playing, and engaged in life. Try to discover more and more about this invisible person inside of you and partner with it.

Then, you could say, "Okay, I get it, you are my ultimate teacher, putting every temptation possible in front of me". And if I can say, "No", without being a fanatic zealot, but just a simple, "No, thank you", I win as I feel good about myself each time I say it.

And when you present me with other temptations or goodies that I think I cannot live without, and then I overcome that temptation as well, I feel good about myself again. And finally, I become conscious, truly awake. "Thank you, my dark friend, please don't let me get away with anything. Together, we can become enlightened". That's when the real fun and laughter begin.

Philadelphia Eagles Sports Football Camp

Philadelphia Eagles football camp takes place at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. At the start of training season, rookies and also free agents will report to the college dorms of the university to prepare for intense, 2-a day, all day workouts. Soon after that, the veterans will report to camp and the full workouts and training will begin.

Another intriguing part of training camp for fans is that they can watch the practice sessions without paying an arm and a leg for tickets. The media is there to watch as well to give football fans at home full reports as to how the players look, who is going to be starting that year, and who may be hurt. This will also be beneficial to those who play Fantasy Football. The Eagles have been training at Lehigh for 13 years. The university has four football practice fields for the team to train on, allowing coaches to work on different things at the same time.

The Eagles started to train at Widener University in 1973. The site was featured in the movie "Invincible" about the former Eagles player Vince Papale. This proved to be very exciting for both Eagles fans and Philadelphia natives. Philadelphia Eagles sports football camp stayed at Widener until 1980 when they moved their training camp to West Chester University. The team stayed there until 1995 when they made the move to Lehigh.

Philadelphia Eagles sports football camp is a great time for the players to make decisions about the upcoming season. Veteran players who may have thought they would start or be a key player that year could easily work their way down to second string. This could happen especially if a new rookie comes on to the scene and steals their thunder. The coaches watch intently as they make their rosters and imperative decisions for the upcoming season.

Players can easily get hurt in this intense strict workout they receive at Philadelphia Eagles sports football camp. This in turn could also give a second string player or rookie a chance to move into the starting lineup, or even start a few more games than they expected. The coaches have a perfect opportunity to weed out the weaker players and put together plays for the upcoming season. They also have the chance to get to know the players better on a personal level, especially the new players and rookies.

Training camp proves to be a very important tool for everyone involved. The players, coaches and even the media get to have their predictions for the new football season. Each year proves to be more exciting then the next and seeing the players get ready for the upcoming year brings about the football fan in everyone.

Understanding "March Madness"

Every year at this time the sports news is dominated by stories about March madness. This phenomenon occupies air waves of both radio and television as well as print space in the daily newspapers. Just what is the big deal, one may wonder?

The big deal is that March Madness is the process of elimination of the best college basketball teams in the country. It ultimately results in finding the "cinderella" team who will reign as champion of the National Colelgiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It is a wildly popular event in which people all over the country get involved by filling out the brackets for the teams they think will match-up against each other, who will win, who will lose and who the ultimate champion will be.

This event occurs during that "downtime" of the year between the end of the football season and the beginning of the baseball season. It is a lifesaver for avid sports fans who love to constantly have a team to be cheering for. March Madness becomes a fun form of recreation among family members and office employees who often wage bets on their personal selections.

The brackets are 65 slots which are to be filled in with ones' team choices. The first 30 slots are automatically given to those teams that have won their own particular conferences. Another automatic choice is the team who has won the Ivy League Division as they do not participate in any conference play. There are then 34 remaining bids which are extended to teams deemed qualified by a panel of 10 officials who select their choices based on the quality of wins, degree of difficulty of schedule and the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). The RPI is a fairly complicated formula which assesses various teams as to their winning percentages, their opponents winning percentages and their opponents' opponents average winning percentages. When these percentages are calculated, the teams with the highest RPI are the best teams.

As the weeks of March Madness progress, most of the teams lose and are eliminated resulting in the final four teams. This is the really big deal because as these teams continue in the play-offs it will result in the emergence of the winning team who is crowned as the NCAA champion. Dozens of college teams dream of this great honor and millions of enthusiastic fans delight in watching the process.
